Climate Awareness Month
A lot happens in October; call it the transitional month if you will. It's definitely fall - time to think about colder nights and how there aren't many days left to button up the house and make it more energy efficient. Time to rake leaves and make compost (hint hint!) October is Fair Trade Month - a great month to commit to buying Fair Trade products like coffee or chocolate. Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaigns with Making Strides all across the country. (Did you know gender-benders are related to breast cancer?) And for something radically different this Halloween, we want you to know about the "Reverse Trick-or-Treating" Campaign by Global Exchange where individuals, schools, PTOs or whole communities can participate. (The deadline is soon so check it out.)
Despite this flurry of activity, we would like to focus on climate change. In two months the world will meet in Copenhagen to discuss what could be the "road map" which determines our planet's future. Even during this past month, scientists have continued to present evidence of increased changes beyond previous predictions. To bring climate awareness to the forefront, www.350.org has organized an International Day of Climate Action. We urge you to take action: attend an event, create an event, scourer the website or watch this video: 350
We could go on and on about the latest evidence, the current predictions, and why this is really serious stuff, but we think the links we provide are much more interesting! We hope you will contact our leaders and urge them to take strong action against climate change in the coming months leading up to Copenhagen. And now for your reading enjoyment:

Chemicals & Pesticides & Cell Phones... Oh My
Big Beauty Companies continue to use some really nasty chemicals. But the biggest kicker of all is that some companies who make large donations to Breast Cancer Research (we think for marketing purposes) continue to have cancer causing ingredients in their products, even chemicals the Breast Cancer Fund has denounced.

What The Heck Do You Do With Old...
Skis and snowboards that your local swap fair will no longer take? Glad you asked! Turn them into something useful of course - it's called repurposing or upcycling. Cool Furniture

Plastic Update
We used to think that food packaging didn't leach. But think again: Chemicals Leach From Packaging
There's not just one disgusting plastic ocean gyre... and not just 2 ...nope, not 3 or 4... but 5 huge floating gender-bender fish eating plastic gyres in the world. Yuck! The Science of Trash

And The Good News Is...
With the recession, a decline in travel and energy use has resulted as folks try to save some pennies. And guess what? That has translated into CO2 reduction for the first time in 40 years. So you see, we can make a difference! (but CO2 is still way too high so don't go all party on us.) You CAN make a difference.

| Blast From the Past You Had No Idea About, Really...
So Don Shea, a dear 85 year old, was munching on some soy beans and happened to say that the first time he had heard about soy was with Henry Ford's car made from soy. Uh, say what? That's right, he remembered the famous movie/photo of Henry Ford taking a sledge hammer to his 1941 "Hemp" car made from hemp, soy, flax and other non metal/plastic materials AND it ran on biofuel. Watch the 1941 Ford Hemp Car (scroll down for video) "What the h#@&% happened?"
