Dear Reader,

M is for March, Mother Nature, and ...mud season (at least in our neck of the woods). While many dread the fickleness and muddiness of March, others revel in the signs of spring, the swollen buds, the higher, warmer sun, and lengthening days.

Voting season is also traditionally in March and local old timers use it as a time to plant seeds. That's right, "start your seedlings by Votin' Day" was often followed by a cautious look of "or else". There is some wisdom in the advice of "or else". March has a sneaky way of getting away from us and, before you know it, the seedlings aren't started yet.

If you need a voting date to inspire you, the local elections are March 9th, so you can use that as your deadline for starting your indoor seeds. Growing your own food is really big at the moment, so we hope you'll give it a try, connect with nature, and reap the joys that come with growing your own food. Try your local farming associations or www.NOFA.org for help.

And oh yes,  March 14th is Daylight Savings, and Earth Hour is on the 27th at 8:30pm.  This is the third year of Earth Hour when we are asked turn off our lights (and all unnecessary electricity, including TV and computer) for just one hour to show the positive impact that many people can have on reducing electrical demand. The savings from last year's Earth Hour are staggering. It's power in numbers and it can make a difference. (Remember, you can always extend the idea of savings beyond Earth Hour - just a friendly reminder.)

Climate Update

  Washington Winter Wonderland

Just how does global warming mean more snow? Because a warmer planet means warmer oceans, which means more water vapor in the atmosphere (4% more in the past 30 years). That means more moisture in the atmosphere, and what goes up must come down.

More about climate: Because Thoreau so carefully documented the species of plants around Walden Pond, changes due to climate change can be accurately noted and the results are not good.

In an experiment, the authors did nothing extraordinary to cause their own blood levels to rise with toxins. Instead, they continued to do ordinary things like use their regular shampoo and eat food from cans - and got toxic results.

A PLEA TO OUR CUSTOMERS
We need your plastic bags!  When we opened the store in 2007, we made a decision not to buy paper or plastic bags - and we haven't!  Instead, we rely on you to bring us your lightly-used bags so that we may re-use them when a customer needs a bag. Thank you!
