Green Tip

Need an earth friendly non plastic salad spinner? One of our customers who pops in from St. John's, (yes the Island in the Caribbean) told us to put clean wet lettuce in one of our netted cotton produce bags and then go outside to swing it around. The best green tip (at least the most fun) we've ever heard!

Dear Reader,
The Month of June
Glorify, Protect, and Celebrate...

Happy June and how glorious it is! This is the month of solstice, before the dog days of summer set in, when the colors of flowers dance across the landscape and the enthusiasm for tending the garden has yet to wane. And let's not forget bugs! If it weren't for those nasty little blood suckers, it's possible that New England would suffer from population over growth because this has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. Now that's making lemonade from lemons!

June also recognizes Father's Day, the third Sunday of every June. While much focus is given to mothers and their connection to Earth, let us remember the other half of the creator of life. Fathers have traditionally been protectors of the family unit and it is with this in mind we hope that same energy will help protect the environment and its future generations.

And then there are weddings in June, lots of them. Weddings are one of those very special times of gift giving and yes, wedding gifts can be green too. What better time to purchase a quality, long lasting, sustainable gift? (And we do have Wedding Registries at RGG) Gift Registry

Lastly, June is the season for graduations. Like spring, graduation is a time to celebrate new beginnings, a time to wish the graduate farewell and good luck for their future. It is also an opportunity to share wisdom and hope for the graduate on their journey into adulthood. With this in mind, we suggest listening to this inspirational UNH Commencement Speech by our locally grown, world renowned, CEYO of Stonyfield Farm...Gary Hirshberg. Click the Video part 2, UNH Commencement  If you have never had the privilege of listening to Gary, this is his best environmental speech to date, in our humble opinion.

And The Good News Is...

Yes we do have good news! UNH, our locally grown place of higher education, made the top 11 of the Greenest Colleges in the entire country with five of the colleges being from New England.
Princeton Review

Part of the reason for their top rating is the recent launch of the "trash to gas" program that uses methane from a land fill in Rochester which is piped to Durham for fuel. Now that's sustainability commitment.

 What's Going On At RGG?
Glad us asked!
- Real Green Goods 2nd Anniversary Celebration will be Saturday July 11th, from 11-3. We will be having invited vendors like Cottonfield and Pear Tree, and giving away bars of Vermont Soap and Stonyfield Yogurt, plus music, discounts to help celebrate being in business for 2 years. Stay tuned...!

- Rhubarb Weekend - June 20th and 21st, Sharing Rhubarb at Real Green Goods. RGG will be giving away bundles of Rhubarb and handing out recipes for this unusual plant. Do you have too much rhubarb yourself? Then bring it on down. Never pick more than a third of the plant, pull the stock out instead of cutting. And yes, there is a website devoted to rhubarb.

Email us your favorite rhubarb recipes.
