Dear Reader,

July is the quintessential summer vacation month with the Fourth of July, barbecues, strawberry fests, boating, and going to the beach. Most summer activities center on cooling off and having some fun in the water.

With the Gulf oil spill past Day 77, water seems a bit more precious as the immensity of environmental devastation is realized. For many of us, this disaster is "down there", but it should be a reminder that clean water can disappear at a moment's notice from our own backyard. Our fresh water lakes around the world are drying up.

Daily Mail

Besides giving us great recreational pleasure, water is a necessity for our very existence - providing for the crops we eat and the water we drink.  We need to keep our water clean and sustainable. Drinking regularly from bottled water is not sustainable: it takes five times the water to produce its own single serving. Science confirms that our obsessive water consumption is a bit much and perhaps unnecessary.

"Drink At Least 8 Glasses Of Water A Day" - Really?

The bottom line is: conserve resources. We all really do live down stream. Respect water, use it wisely, and try to keep it clean so that we may all share what it has to offer.

GMO Update

Monsanto has won in the Supreme Court and a ban on genetically modified alfalfa sprouts has been lifted. This is a big deal because alfalfa is a major food source for cattle and other animals, besides humans, and GMO alfalfa will work its way deep into the food system.

 And The Good News Is...

A new solar power plant in Spain is done with mirrors, the first of its kind in Europe. This is very cool and perhaps this technology may spread to the U.S.
