Dear Reader,
Happy New Year and Happy New Decade! We know it's technically not a new decade until next year, but hey, it gives great literary opportunity. The millennium does seem just like yesterday (unl ess you are twenty-something) and so much has happened. 9/11 changed our lives forever. The web brought us self oriented options which have blossomed into social media only to be extended by "i things": iPhone, iPod and iTunes, with more "i" products on the horizon. Your family time might include everyone on their laptop in front of a TV program. And many kids aren't sure how a chicken's egg comes to be. Was this progress?
I suppose it was a necessary evil in order to turn it around and establish some priorities. To some degree we have witnessed a recent backlash against the "I" or "me" decade and we're hoping that the next decade will focus on the "we". We, meaning, that which surrounds us with regard to work, community, family and yes, the environment. This doesn't mean starting a commune but embracing last decade's technology and making good out of it for all.
The environmental cause can be found all over the web including Facebook and Twitter, where there is great potential for learning. What's important is to find your balance as we enter into this new decade of "we" or as some say "our collective consciousness". And if, at any moment, you still feel overwhelmed, please remember the best remedy of all is to: "Go Outside".

Green Resolutions
GreenER is Key
A new customer came into the store on Jan. 2 after resolving to be "greener", to check out what we sold, who we were and to learn more. Her son "was very green" and she seemed sincerely willing to jump in but insecure enough to not know in which direction. After explaining that the triple mantra of "reduce, reuse, and recycle" was the best place to start, she didn't seem as overwhelmed. In fact, she realized that she was already doing some of it.
The point being, what ever your starting point is today, being "greener" is what is most important. Little things like turning off the unnecessary light, turning down the heat and reducing waste all add up. (And did we say you save money too?) As a wise old man once said, "Look back, but don't stare". So look forward, and resolve to be greenER.

Cleaners Create Superbugs
Norway, the most infection-free country in the world, has a simple and successful solution to killer superbugs that cause infections: reduce the use of antibiotics. In other parts of the world including the U.S., antibiotic resistance is a leading public health threat.

Sewing Confidence Program Connects with RGG
Rubia is a New Hampshire based organization working with women in rural Afghanistan promoting their hand-embroidered textiles. Rubia has recently started working locally through a grant helping resettled refugees learn to sew. Real Green Goods worked with Sewing Confidence to come up with projects that RGG could actually sell. The first sewing project was gift bags and we are proud to have sold almost all of them during the holiday season. The second project was Laundry Clothes Pin Bags and we have many of these brightly colored bags available for sale.
Check out the Rubia Newsletter and scroll to the bottom for more details about Sewing Confidence.
